The Use of Catharsis in Titus Andronicus - Literature Essay Samples

In his tragedy Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare successfully engages his audience in a variety of emotions. Although these emotions are often negative, they still provide a cathartic release for the reader. Catharsis is defined as â€Å"a sudden emotional breakdown or climax that constitutes overwhelming feelings of great sorrow, pity, laughter or any extreme change in emotion that results in the restoration, renewal, and revitalization for living†. Aristotle was correct in his argument that tragedy creates powerful emotions that â€Å"cleanse† the heart of the viewer. Plays, just like every other form of entertainment, distract us from our daily lives. We, as the audience, relate to and connect with the characters because on some subconscious level we see ourselves in them. As they experience problems and emotions, so do we. Once their troubles are resolved, we too feel satisfied. It gives us the sense that our lives aren’t so bad because it could always be worse. The term catharsis was originated by Aristotle in his writing Poetics. It has now become a major instrument in the production and analysis of tragic drama (Kruse 162). According to Aristotle, catharsis occurs when dramatic action causes pity or fear and produces the same reaction within a person. Kruse attempts to reidentify catharsis according to three classifications: clarification, purgation, and cleansing (164). Clarification refers to the pleasure we get when we discover a connection between something we learn during the play and its relationship to our actual lives. The purgation interpretation of catharsis suggests that pity and fear are disturbing and uncomfortable emotions that need to be eliminated. These emotions are raised to the highest possible level and are cast off as the story is resolved. Finally, catharsis as cleansing is the most popularly held interpretation, especially as it refers to Shakespearean tragedy. In it, catharsis is the function of the plot and acts a s a means of achieving a certain end. While scholars disagree as to what Aristotle meant exactly when he described catharsis, Shakespeare has effectively used each interpretation in many of his plays, including Titus Andronicus. Shakespeare effectively causes catharsis in its most basic definition by stirring up our emotions as the plot unfolds. The extreme situations and changes of emotion get us riled up and angry. We transition from disliking Titus for his staunch adherence to rules to sympathizing with his loss and defending his actions of revenge. Our pity for Tamora quickly dissipates into hatred and bitterness in the way she avenges her son’s death. Our feelings continue to grow and change until the final scene when everything is resolved. When justice is done, we feel pleased and purge all the emotions the tragedy created. Based on the previous definition of catharsis, there are several scenes within the play that â€Å"cleanse† the reader of their feelings. The first of these occurs in Act II, Scene IV when Marcus discovers Lavinia in the woods. Chiron and Demetrius have raped her and cut off her hands and tongue so she will not be able to communicate with anyone. Marcus’s following speech is filled with sorrow and astonishment. His last lines sums up the dismay that her family, and the audience, feels: One hour’s storm will drown the fragrant meads; What will whole months of tears do to thy father’s eyes? Do not draw back, for we will mourn with thee: O, could our mourning ease thy misery! (2.4.54 – 57). Since the audience knows all that has happened, we are filled with sympathy for Titus at the loss of his children. We also grieve for Lavinia because she watched her husband’s murder, was assaulted and mutilated, must watch her brothers be punished for something they did not do, and must now face her father in shame. Worst of all, she is the only one who knows the truth, but cannot speak. The audience experiences yet another emotion here: frustration. In the film, the actress portraying Lavinia makes this the best scene of the movie, moving us to the verge of tears. The second scene in which we experience an overflow of emotion occurs at the beginning of Act III. Titus is at a crossroad, both literally and emotionally. He has just watched his sons dragged off to their deaths, learns his only other living son has been banished, and sees the mangled Lavinia for the first time. Then, he is tricked by Aaron into cutting off his hand in an attempt to save his sons. When he discovers it was all in vain, he finally breaks down. At this point he must decide if he will continue to be loyal to Rome and all the rules he believes in so firmly or if he will honor his children by avenging the injustices they suffered: â€Å"Give me a sword, I’ll chop off my hands too;/ For they have fought for Rome, and all in vain;/. . . And they have served me to effectless use:† (3.1.72 – 73, 76). After a short fit of madness, he vows to return all the mischief done to him. This is a major turning point in the play and leads directly into the scene tha t cleanses all the emotions developed during this play. The final two scenes of the play are the most cleansing. In Act V, Scenes II and III, we realize that Titus is not crazy, but deceiving his enemies to create his justice. He is merciless in his killing of Chiron and Demetrius and equally so in feeding them to Tamora (5.3.60 – 63). Although the action is quick, we are cleansed because everything is now out in the open and justice has been served to everyone who is wronged. I was confused when he killed Lavinia, but realized it was done in both their interests. He would no longer be saddened by her appearance and she would no longer have to live in shame of being disgraced. Tamora has finally gotten punishment equal to what she gave Titus. They have both taken all of each other’s children, the deepest pain one can receive. Even Aaron receives a torturous death, which ironically, is pleasing to the audience. The emotional roller coaster is over and as icing on the cake, we are happy when Lucius ascends to the throne as kin g (5.3.139 – 140). All of the previous scenes move us to emotional extremes, which most would say leads to catharsis. Heather James, however, argues differently: â€Å"Shakespearean tragedy has the power to communicate sympathetic passions but does not necessarily lead, as Aristotle claims, to a purging of dangerous emotions. For the audience, the play substitutes one source of anxiety for another† (James 364). She believes the emotions evoked in the audience by the play, while moving, are too weak to create the reaction Aristotle intended in real catharsis. She goes on to relate the final scene of the play to Dido in Vergil’s Aeneid. The observance of tragedy and the sadness created by death all move the characters to pick up and create new lives. This, James insists, is not cathartic for the audience. While James makes a decent argument for her assertions, there is room for disagreement. It is the final scene in which we feel most cleansed. While some of Titus’s actions throughout the play are quite confusing, in the end, we feel calm and satisfied. If for no other reason, it is because we, the reader, know Titus is pleased even though he is dead. His family also seems to be able to move on as things begin to turn around for them. Things can only go well now. This realization is universal and can be true within our own lives. For this reason, it can be a release for both the reader and the audience. We are left with one emotion, though: curiosity. We can only wonder if Tamora and Aaron’s son will seek revenge on Lucius in the future. That is, after all, the way Shakespearean tragedy works. Otto Skorzeny - Early Life Career: Otto Skorzeny was born June 12, 1908, in Vienna, Austria. Raised in a middle class family, Skorzeny spoke fluent German and French and was educated locally before attending university. While there, he developed skills in fencing. Taking part in numerous bouts, he received a long scar on the left side of his face. This along with his height (64), was one of Skorzenys distinguishing features. Unhappy with the rampant economic depression prevalent in Austria, he joined the Austrian Nazi Party in 1931 and a short time later became a member of the SA (Stormtroopers). Otto Skorzeny - Joining the Military: A civil engineer by trade, Skorzeny came to minor prominence when he saved Austrian President Wilhelm Miklas from being shot during the Anschluss in 1938. This action caught the eye of Austrian SS chief Ernst Kaltenbrunner. With the beginning of World War II in September 1939, Skorzeny attempted to join the Luftwaffe but instead was assigned as an officer-cadet in the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (Hitlers bodyguard regiment). Serving as a technical officer with the rank of second lieutenant, Skorzeny put his engineering training to use. During the invasion of France the following year, Skorzeny traveled with 1st Waffen SS Divisions artillery. Seeing little action, he later took part in the German campaign in the Balkans. During these operations, he compelled a large Yugoslav force to surrender and was promoted to first lieutenant. In June 1941, Skorzeny, now serving with the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, took part in Operation Barbarossa. Attacking into the Soviet Union, Skorzeny aided in the fighting as German troops neared Moscow. Assigned to a technical unit, he was tasked with seizing key buildings in the Russian capital after its fall. Otto Skorzeny - Becoming a Commando: As the Soviet defenses held, this mission was ultimately called off. Remaining on the Eastern Front, Skorzeny was wounded by shrapnel from Katyusha rockets in December 1942. Though injured, he refused treatment and continued fighting until the effects of his wounds forced his evacuation. Taken to Vienna to recover, he received the Iron Cross. Given a staff role with the Waffen-SS in Berlin, Skorzeny began extensive reading and research into commando tactics and warfare. Enthusiastic about this alternative approach to warfare he began advocating it within the SS. Based on his work, Skorzeny believed that new, unconventional units should be formed to conduct attacks deep behind enemy lines. In April 1943, his work bore fruit as he was selected by Kaltenbrunner, now the head of the RSHA (SS-Reichssicherheitshauptamt - Reich Main Security Office) to develop a training course for operatives that included paramilitary tactics, sabotage, and spying. Promoted to captain, Skorzeny quickly received command of Sonderverband z.b.V. Friedenthal. A special operations unit, it was redesignated 502nd SS Jà ¤ger Battalion Mitte that June. Relentlessly training his men, Skorzenys unit conducted their first mission, Operation Francois, that summer. Dropping into Iran, a group from the 502nd was tasked with contacting dissident tribes in the region and encouraging them to attack Allied supply lines. While contact was made, little resulted from the operation. With the collapse of Benito Mussolinis regime in Italy, the dictator was arrested by the Italian government and moved through a series of safe houses. Angered by this Adolf Hitler ordered that Mussolini be rescued. Otto Skorzeny - The Most Dangerous Man in Europe: Meeting with a small group of officers in July 1943, Hitler personally selected Skorzeny to oversee the operation to free Mussolini. Familiar with Italy from a prewar honeymoon trip, he began a series of reconnaissance flights over the country. During this process he was shot down twice. Locating Mussolini at the remote Campo Imperatore Hotel atop Gran Sasso Mountain, Skorzeny, General Kurt Student, and Major Harald Mors began planning a rescue mission. Dubbed Operation Oak, the plan called for the commandoes to land twelve D230 gliders on a small patch of clear land before storming the hotel. Moving forward on September 12, the gliders landed on the mountain top and seized the hotel without firing a shot. Collecting Mussolini, Skorzeny and the deposed leader departed Gran Sasso aboard a small Fieseler Fi 156 Storch. Arriving in Rome, he escorted Mussolini to Vienna. As a reward for the mission, Skorzeny was promoted to major and awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. Skorzenys daring exploits at Gran Sasso were widely publicized by the Nazi regime and he was soon dubbed the most dangerous man in Europe. Otto Skorzeny - Later Missions: Riding the success of the Gran Sasso mission, Skorzeny was asked to oversee Operation Long Jump which called for operatives to assassinate Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin at the November 1943 Tehran Conference. Unconvinced that the mission could succeed, Skorzeny had it cancelled due to poor intelligence and the arrest of the lead agents. Moving on, he began planning Operation Knights Leap which was intended to capture Yugoslav leader Josip Tito at his Drvar base. Though he intended to personally lead the mission, he backed out after visiting Zagreb and finding its secrecy compromised. Despite this, the mission still went forward and ended disastrously in May 1944. Two months later, Skorzeny found himself in Berlin following the July 20 Plot to kill Hitler. Racing around the capital, he aided in putting down the rebels and maintaining Nazi control of the government. In October, Hitler summoned Skorzeny and gave him orders to go to Hungary and stop Hungarys Regent, Admiral Miklà ³s Horthy, from negotiating peace with the Soviets. Dubbed Operation Panzerfaust, Skorzeny and his men captured Horthys son and sent him to Germany as a hostage before securing Castle Hill in Budapest. As a result of the operation, Horthy left office and Skorzeny was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Otto Skorzeny - Operation Griffin: Returning to Germany, Skorzeny began planning Operation Griffin. A false-flag mission, it called for his men to dress in American uniforms and penetrate US lines during the opening phases of the Battle of Bulge to cause confusion and disrupt Allied movements. Moving forward with around 25 men, Skorzenys force had only minor success and many of his men were captured. Upon being taken, they spread rumors that Skorzeny was planning a raid on Paris to capture or kill General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Though untrue, these rumors led to Eisenhower being placed under heavy security. With the end of the operation, Skorzeny was transferred east and commanded regular forces as an acting major general. Mounting a tenacious defense of Frankfurt, he received the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross. With defeat on the horizon, Skorzeny was tasked with creating a Nazi guerrilla organization dubbed the Werewolves. Lacking sufficient manpower to build a fighting force, he instead used the group to create esc ape routes out of Germany for Nazi officials. While our society has pushed for a larger focus on promoting diversity and acceptance, criticisms have emerged regarding the way we discuss and analyze certain differences. This is especially present in discussions concerning race, which is often difficult to hold conversations about and can easily become controversial. Instead of easing into these issues and differences that go on between various ethnicities, many members of modern society have adopted a â€Å"color blind† approach to handling these issues. The main point of color blindness is to treat individuals as equals with various factors, such as race and ethnicity, being disregarded. While there were a few black, Asian and Hispanic studen ts, they mostly socialized with each other, rarely garnering any attention from their white peers, myself included. Because of this lack of exposure, I was not able to properly understand the issues facing these groups or see the reasons they were different from me outside of different physical features. In addition, no African American families lived in my neighborhood with the exception of one mixed race family, which led me to the belief that these students came from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and lived in less affluent neighborhoods as a result of their parents’ poor decisions and less prominent career choices. Another reason why I lacked understanding these individuals is because of my own personal background. While I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood with majority white families, racism was ever present in the daily interactions I was exposed to within that community. A fair amount of this has to do with most families having an extensive history living in the American South, with most parents being raised during the Civil Rights Movement in mostly rural or small town communities. It was also stated in this case that an organization which had been exempted under the Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC can participate and form an LLC or a partnership. The operation agreement for an LLC should, however, allow that ventures that are hybrid can be formed between nonprofit entities and for-profit entities. There is, however, a limitation on them statutorily under the clause of required purpose. The uniform and state Acts have eighteen purposes, however, the default language that any purposes or purpose which is language or some form of this language is used in most states. Delaware under Title 6 Sections 18-106(a) (2008) have provisions for general business activity which states the purpose of the business can be any lawful business which may or may not be for profit the only exception being the business of banking. The American Law Institutes Principles of Law acknowledged the LLCs ability to be an exempt organization. Further, it must also be noted that in a for-profit corporation the owners of the corporation shall be the shareholders. In an LLC, the owners are the members of the LLC. The Prussian Baron von Steuben, being a newcomer to the Revolutionary cause in America, was in a position to see many of the deficiencies in military discipline and their causes. The reasons for his unique insight may have been due to the fact that he was distanced from the revolutionary ideals in America, and as a result, was able to better observe and understand them; and ultimately use them to shape his new and successful form of discipline in the Continental Army. Most of the commanders of the Continental Army, from the commander in chief to the lower officers had subscribed to the traditional European method that relied on fear to achieve discipline. This method of fear was probably not essential, and had little if any effect in the early days of the war because the soldiers were mostly fighting for their own ideologies. To the soldiers, the commanders were of little importance. The soldiers were going to fight their own fight, and leave the battle when they felt it necessary. The soldier saw himself as a volunteer, a citizen fighting in a group of citizens, and as a result did not respond well to the traditional forms of discipline. The soldier knew it wasn't necessary for him to serve, and he knew that he would not be looked down upon for not serving or leaving the army by his fellow revolutionaries. He had the freedom to chose how he wished to serve the revolution, and military service was not an obligation. One aspect of the traditional European system that Baron von Steuben felt needed change was the relationship between the officers and the soldiers. Officers in the Continental Army felt it was necessary to distance themselves from the common soldiers, as an officer had an obligation as a gentleman as well. This division was along social lines, and by separation, the officers felt the common soldiers would show even greater respect. Royster describes this accurately by saying that the officers tried "to make themselves haughty objects of the soldiers' awe." (215) Steuben did several things to put the officers and the soldiers on common ground. First, sergeants were no longer to do the training and drilling of soldiers. Officers were encouraged to train, drill, and march with their soldiers. They were also encouraged to eat with the common soldiers as well, whenever possible. The officers needed to show love of the soldiers to earn their respect, and in doing this the officers needed to set themselves as an example to the soldiers by overachieving, rather than distancing themselves and underachieving in the eyes of the soldier. Before Steuben arrived, the forms of drills, training, and discipline in the Continental Army were mainly achieved at the discretion of each particular officer. There was no set standard for drills and training, and each battalion, company, and regiment had different methods. Baron von Steuben set a standard that became universal in the army and all soldiers and officers were to follow it. Through constant repetition of these rather simplified drills and training methods, coupled with the newly evident compassion and caring being shown by the officers, soldiers soon began to show a level of pride and professionalism in doing their duties in the Continental Army. Steuben catered to the needs and ideologies of the men in the Continental Army. He knew that soldiers who felt that military service was not a necessity, would often question authority. When given an order many soldiers would ask 'Why?' This was what Steuben realized and built his form of discipline around. If a soldier asked why, and there was a good reason for it, then the soldier would ultimately obey the order. This is why the uniformity and simplicity of Steuben?s system was so successful in the Continental Army. Steuben's method of discipline and training was so successful for one main reason, it was catered to the soldier and not to the officer. It had the ultimate result of making the soldier feel like a soldier and not like a volunteer. It established a sense of pride in the soldiers and in the job they did. By the later years of the war, native courage, virtue, and liberty were not enough to encourage soldiers. Steuben method created a professionalism in the Continental Army which, along with the ideologies of the men, was enough to keep the moral of the soldier high despite the many hardships of winter camps like Valley Forge and Morristown.

Disney and his staff began work on six cartoons, each one a seven-minute fairy tale that combined live action and animation. Unfortunately, Pictorial Films went bankrupt in July 1923; as a result,  so did Laugh-O-Gram Films. Next, Disney decided he would try his luck at working in a Hollywood studio as a director and joined his brother Roy in Los Angeles, where Roy was recovering from tuberculosis. Having no luck getting a job at any of the studios, Disney sent a letter to Margaret J. Winkler, a New York cartoon distributor, to see if she had any interest in distributing his Laugh-O-Grams. After Winkler viewed the cartoons, she and Disney signed a contract. On October 16, 1923, Disney and Roy rented a room at the back of a real estate office in Hollywood. Disney provided the voice of Mickey Mouse and Powers added sound effects and music. In 1929, Disney began making â€Å"Silly Symphonies,† a series of cartoons that included dancing skeletons, the Three Little Pigs, and characters other than Mickey Mouse, including Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. In 1931, a new film-coloring technique known as Technicolor became the latest in film technology. Until then, everything had been filmed in black and white. To hold off the competition, Disney paid to hold the rights to Technicolor for two years. He filmed a Silly Symphony titled Flowers and Trees in Technicolor, showing colorful nature with human faces, and the film won the Academy Award for Best Cartoon of 1932. On December 18, 1933, Lillian gave birth to Diane Marie Disney, and on December 21, 1936, Lillian and Walt Disney adopted Sharon Mae Disney. Feature-Length Cartoons Disney decided to add dramatic storytelling to his cartoons, but making a feature-length cartoon had everyone (including Roy and Lillian) saying it would never work; they believed audiences just wouldn’t sit that long through a dramatic cartoon. Despite the naysayers, Disney, ever the experimenter, went to work on the feature-length fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Production of the cartoon cost $1.4 million (a massive sum in 1937) and was soon dubbed â€Å"Disney’s Folly.† When it premiered in theaters on December 21, 1937, though, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a box office sensation. Despite the Great Depression, it earned $416 million. A notable achievement in cinema, the movie won Disney an Honorary Academy Award. The citation read, For Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, recognized as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field. Union Strikes After the success of Snow White, Disney constructed his state-of-the-art Burbank Studio, deemed a worker’s paradise for a staff of about 1,000 workers. The studio, with animation buildings, sound stages, and recording rooms, produced Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942). Unfortunately, these feature-length cartoons lost money worldwide due to the start of World War II. Along with the cost of the new studio, Disney found himself in debt. He offered 600,000 shares of common stock, sold at five dollars apiece. The stock offerings sold out quickly and erased the debt. Between 1940 and 1941, movie studios began unionizing; it wasn’t long before Disney’s workers wanted to unionize as well. While his workers demanded better pay and working conditions, Disney believed that his company had been infiltrated by communists. After numerous and heated meetings, strikes, and lengthy negotiations, Disney finally became unionized. However, the whole process left Disney feeling disillusioned and discouraged. World War II With the union question finally settled, Disney was able to turn his attention back to his cartoons; this time for the U.S. government. The United States had joined World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and it was sending millions of young men overseas to fight. The U.S. government wanted Disney to produce training films using his popular characters; Disney obliged, creating more than 400,000 feet of film (about 68 hours). More Movies After the war, Disney returned to his own agenda and made Song of the South (1946), a movie that was 30 percent animation and 70 percent live action. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah was named the best movie song of 1946 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences, while James Baskett, who played the character of Uncle Remus in the movie, won an Oscar. In 1947, Disney decided to make a documentary about Alaskan seals titled Seal Island (1948). It won an Academy Award for best two-reel documentary. Disney then assigned his top talent to make Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), and Peter Pan (1953). Plans for Disneyland After building a train to ride his two daughters around his new home in Holmby Hills, California, Disney began formulating a dream in 1948 to build Mickey Mouse Amusement Park across the street from his studio. He visited fairs, carnivals, and parks around the world to study the choreography of people and attractions. Disney borrowed on his life insurance policy and created WED Enterprises to organize his amusement park idea, which he was now referring to as Disneyland. Disney and Herb Ryman drew out the plans for the park in one weekend. The plan included an entrance gate to Main Street that would lead to Cinderella’s Castle and off to different lands of interest, including Frontier Land, Fantasy Land, Tomorrow Land, and Adventure Land. The park would be clean and innovative, a place where parents and children could have fun together on rides and attractions; they would be entertained by Disney characters in the â€Å"happiest place on earth.† Roy visited New York to seek a contract with a television network. Roy and Leonard Goldman reached an agreement where ABC would give Disney a $500,000 investment in Disneyland in exchange for a weekly Disney television series. ABC became a 35 percent owner of Disneyland and guaranteed loans up to $4.5 million. In July 1953, Disney commissioned the Stanford Research Institute to find a location for his (and the world’s) first major theme park. Anaheim, California, was selected since it could easily be reached by freeway from Los Angeles. Previous movie profits were not enough to cover the cost of building Disneyland, which took about a year to build at a cost of $17 million. Roy made numerous visits to the Bank of Americas headquarters to secure more funding. Disneyland Opens On July 13, 1955, Disney sent out 6,000 exclusive guest invitations, including to Hollywood movie stars, to enjoy the opening of Disneyland.  ABC sent cameramen to film the opening. However, many tickets were counterfeited and 28,000 people showed up. Rides broke down, food stands ran out of food, a heat wave caused freshly poured asphalt to capture shoes, and a gas leak caused temporary closings in a few themed areas. Despite the newspapers referring to this cartoon-ish day as Black Sunday, guests from all over the world loved it and the park became a major success. Ninety days later, the one-millionth guest passed through the parks turnstile. Plans for Walt Disney World, Florida In 1964, Disney’s Mary Poppins premiered; the film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards. With this success, Disney sent Roy and a few other Disney executives to Florida in 1965 to purchase land for another theme park. In October 1966, Disney gave a press conference to describe his plans for building an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) in Florida. The new park would be five times the size of Disneyland, and it would include shopping, entertainment venues, and hotels. The new Disney World development would not be completed, however, until five years after Disney’s death. The new Magic Kingdom (which included Main Street USA; Cinderellas Castle leading to Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland) opened on October 1, 1971, along with Disneys Contemporary Resort, Disneys Polynesian Resort, and Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort Campground. EPCOT, Walt Disney’s second theme park vision, which featured a future world of innovation and a showcase of other countries, opened in 1982. Death In 1966, doctors informed Disney that he had lung cancer. After having a lung removed and several chemotherapy sessions, Disney collapsed in his home and was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital on December 15, 1966. He died at 9:35 a.m. from an acute circulatory collapse and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Legacy Disney left behind one of the largest media empires in the world. Since his death, the Walt Disney Company has only grown; today, it employs more than 200,000 people and generates billions in revenue each year. For his artistic achievements, Disney amassed 22 Oscars and numerous other honors. In 1960, he was given two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (one for his film and one for his television work).
